Meet the critters

Uni
Said Goodbye on 2/28/23
Uni
Uni, a Salmon Faverolles rooster, was the first chicken hatched on our homestead. His name came from the fact that he was the only chicken in his brood to hatch. We became extremely attached to each other, and Uni preferred to be around me more than the other chickens.

Uni had a curved beak deformity that required special feeding. He was my friend and taught me to not be afraid of roosters. Uni changed everything about how I felt about chickens. He was killed by a hawk, and his loss devastated me. Uni was my "best ever chicken." I love you, Uni.
Nonami
Nonami
Nonami, a Salmon Faverolles, had the same daddy as Uni. He was the second brood we hatched. He is the current alpha rooster in the flock. His name came from the fact that he was the only cockerel in his brood that didn't have a name: No Name = NoNami

Nonami is a very gentle rooster and has never shown aggression to people. He watches out for the ladies, but he is always the first to bed at night! Nonami is the brother of Uni and the daddy of Oa. He lost half of his comb in the severe winter storm that hit in 2022.
Finn
said goodbye on 3/30/23
Finn
Finn, a Salmon Faverolles, was a very special little guy that, sadly, wasn't with us long. He got his name from the funny pattern of his tail feathers that resembled the fin of a fish. He had some unidentified underlying health issues.

He was the runt of his brood. I saved his life on several occasions, and one day he suddenly died of unknown causes in his sleep. He was a gentle, sweet cockerel that is greatly missed.
Kaja
Kaja
Kaja, a Norwegian Elkhound, came to the homestead at 7 weeks old in March 2023 after Uni died. Because I was so heartbroken over losing Uni, Glenn thought I should have a more resilient pet that would also hopefully double as a guardian for the chickens. Her name is Scandinavian and means "pure."

Through training and growing up alonside Oa, Kaja learned how to be a protector of our chickens and has run off hawks multiple times. We thought she would be more of an outdoor dog, but she would much rather be inside where she can beg for attention! Despite being predominantly indoors, she can hear the chickens in distress much better than we can, and she readily demands to go to their defense if she senses trouble!

She has become my new sidekick and loves the homestead life! She doesn't like other people though and is quick to throw a fit if someone is on her farm!
Rockstar
Rockstar
Rockstar, a Salmon Faverolles, is our young and up-and-comer. His name came from his mohawk-styled comb! He likes to act like he's tough as nails, but as soon as the head rooster is around, he tucks tail and runs! Well, he barely has a tail...
Oa
Said Goodbye on 9/5/24
Oa
Oa, a Salmon Faverolles, was my pet rooster after Uni died. His daddy is Nonami. His name means "treasure" in Samoan.

Oa was a special needs chicken and had trouble walking, so I carried him everywhere. He grew up with Kaja. I sadly lost Oa to a crazy case of flystrike that he was too weak to survive. He is very missed.
Miss Momma
Miss Momma
Miss Momma is a Buff Orphington and was the first hen to hatch out her own chicks on the homestead. She mostly hatched out Lavendar Orphington babies, but she got one of her own in the mix!

She tirelessly looked out for and took care of her babies. She's a very special lady around here!
Whitey
Whitey
Whitey is one of the babies hatched by Miss Momma. He was the only one of her brood that was her own: half Buff Orphington, half Salmon Faverolles. He was the only white chicken in the batch, and that's how he got his name.

He is a loner and is at the bottom of the pecking order since he doesn't stand up for himself which is surprising, because he's the biggest rooster!

Meet the Machines

Bodie
Bodie
Bodie was our first "tractor," and his main job is keeping the lawn mowed. But where Bessie falls short, Bodie shines. Bodie is small and agile, and he can do things Bessie is too big and messy for! Plus, I don't use Bessie, but I have no problem hopping on Bodie!

Bodie gets jealous of Bessie, because Bessie gets to do "all the fun stuff." They are parked beside each other every night, so at the end of the day, they are friends again.
Bessie
Bessie
Bessie is our 5205 John Deere tractor. She is big and beefy, and she gets all the tough jobs done from bailing hay to carrying bags of lime... Bessie's the workhorse of the homestead!

The origin of Bessie's name has a little bit of backstory. I jokingly called her Bessie from the day we got her even though Glenn wasn't having it. I called her Bessie so much, eventually he started calling her Bessie too. So, in the end, I won!

Bessie likes to pick on Bodie, because she thinks Bodie is a weenie. Truth is though, no one else can talk bad about Bodie, because she always has his back!
